The Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo will use NFTs and blockchain technologies to enhance its newest Tonale SUV.
After a recent trend of vehicle companies jumping into blockchain technologies to create car-resembling NFTs, Alfa Romeo might have taken it a step further. On Tuesday, the company announced its newest model Alfa Romeo Tonale, powered by next-gen blockchain technologies.
The Tonale SUV will feature NFTs that will act as sort of a replacement for the vehicle identification number (VIN). Digital assets will track the car’s data throughout its life cycle from the moment of purchase, ensuring the original ownership, gathering information related to the maintenance of the car, and, presumably, earlier traffic incidents.

According to Alfa Romeo’s Head of Marketing and Communication Francesco Calcara, this will be the first car ever to have that much digitalization, stating:
"Tonale is the first car ever to keep a blockchain, non-fungible token. NFTs are based on the same distributed information logic that protects your Bitcoin."
With that being said, in order for the car to track the information, the Tonale SUV will need to have been purchased from an official Alfa Romeo dealer.
In mid-January of 2022, Mercedes-Benz announced its partnership with several artists from Art2People to create NFTs that depict its G-Class series vehicle models, while earlier last year Ferrari joined a blockchain start-up Velas for plans to create their own exclusive non-fungible tokens.
