Winter Storm called Landon might approach some parts of Texas. Following that, the state’s power grid demand might peak on Thursday night.
Keeping that in mind, major crypto firms aren’t waiting around and powering down immediately.
In 2021, when the huge winter storm arrived, people lived without electricity for days in various areas of Texas. Additionally, many power facilities were shut down, generators were frozen, and the delivery of energy to many households in need of heat was delayed.

Despite the fact that Texas is home to several crypto mining facilities, some analysts believe that activities in the state are unlikely to have contributed to the power outages.
Riot Blockchain's communications director, Trystine Payfer, spoke on the matter, stating that the company's Rockdale data center has been powered down by 99 percent since Tuesday. In response to ERCOT's demands, Texas Blockchain Council addressed a letter to Texas Governor Greg Abbott alerting him that they planned to shut down or limit operations.
Reed Clay, Texas Blockchain Council vice president, told in the letter that:
“As Texans, we want you to know that we are actively monitoring the incoming cold front, as we would any seasonal weather event.”
Also adding:
“Likewise, we are taking proactive measures to shut down operations, shed load, and create additional capacity in response to ERCOT's needs should it be necessary.”
1 gigawatt was used by miners in Texas for actions under normal circumstances. Furthermore, Texans use 35,016 megawatts. Unfortunately, the forecast revealed that this demand can possibly increase by about 42% in the next 24 hours. When the temperature drops to its lowest, the usage number can change to 49,786 megawatts.
Just as important as the positive market signals we send to generators is our unique ability to immediately shed load when ERCOT demands it. This sort of demand response has and should continue to be a powerful tool in any grid management strategy.
Experts say that it shouldn’t get worse than last year, according information provided by ERCOT.
Governor Abbot who claims to be a “crypto law proposal supporter”, encourages mining companies to establish a shop in the state. Legislation recognizing cryptocurrencies under Texas commercial law was also approved, as well as establishing a blockchain working group.
