In the Metaverse, users can play games, file official forms, receive tax-related help and other services. The government claimed that it created the Metaverse to serve as a “place of communication for citizens,” which allows citizens to visit a number of Seoul’s attractions, such as Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, Dongdaemun Design Plaza.
It is worth noting that the current launch is only the first phase of “Metaverse Seoul.”
When talking about the launch, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon noted:
Metaverse Seoul will be an important communication tool for citizens in the new normal. It is an inclusive administrative service that everyone can take advantage of without any time and space obstacles.
It is reported that the Seoul Metropolitan Government spent around 2 billion won (approximately $1.6 million) on the first phase of “Metaverse Seoul.”
The Seoul Mayor revealed that the second phase of Metaverse will focus on making the project more accessible to the elderly, who may experience trouble visiting the city’s offices in person. Oh Se-hoon did not disclose when the second phase is expected to be launched.
The news about Seoul’s plans to launch a public Metaverse first broke back in 2021. At that time, the country’s government stated that by 2023 it hopes to launch a Metaverse “allowing citizens to conveniently meet with avatar officials to deal with civil complaints and consultations, which are currently handled only by visiting municipal offices.”
Seoul is not the only South Korean city interested in developing and expanding its blockchain ecosystem. At the end of August 2022, the South Korean city of Busan announced its plans to launch the Digital Asset Exchange by working hand in hand with multiple crypto-related firms, such as Binance, FTX, Crypto.com and Gate.io.
