Elon Musk and several other tech leaders and experts have called for a 6-month halt on the development of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
More than 1000 people from the technology sector, including Tesla's founder and CEO Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and researchers from DeepMind, have signed an open letter calling for a pause on artificial intelligence development.
In a March 22nd letter published by Future of Life Institution (FOLI), prominent figures warned about the potential threat the development of AI poses to “society and humanity” as various tech labs race to build and deploy more powerful AIs every day.

The experts highlighted that advanced AIs are human competitive and can pose risks in various areas, including information channels, jobs, “non-human minds,” and civilization in general.
The letter explained that the temporary pause in the development would give the industry time to plan on managing the development of powerful AIs to ensure that their risks are effectively managed.
Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.
The institution also suggested that AI labs and independent researchers could use the pause to create effective safety protocols for advanced AI models.
The letter also echoed the recent statement from OpenAI’s executive Sam Altman, calling for independent reviews before training AI systems.
However, not all AI advocates have agreed with FOLI’s urge to pause the development of advanced AI. SingularityNET CEO, Ben Goertzel, expressed a different opinion, downplaying the alleged threat of language learning models (LLMs), claiming that they will not become artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Artificial general intelligence (AGI) refers to a machine that can learn and understand any intellectual task, while AIs are machines that enhance the performance of tasks.
Goertzel has called for a shift of focus to slowing down research and development in bioweapons and nuclear weapons, which he believes pose a real threat to humanity.
Mike Novogratz, the CEO of Galaxy Digital, recently said that the government should shift its regulatory efforts from crypto to AI, claiming that the latter technology can cause a "deep fake" identity crisis.
