Holographic Smart Glasses Will Overtake Smartphones, Says Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, believes that smart glasses with holographic displays are set to revolutionize communication and computing, potentially overtaking smartphones.

During a conversation with YouTuber Kane Sutter, known as Kallaway, Zuckerberg highlighted these innovative glasses as Meta's most thrilling upcoming product. He introduced the concept of smart glasses that feature cameras, microphones, speakers, and a full field-of-view (FOV) holographic display.

Zuckerberg explained that while these glasses won't entirely replace smartphones, they will reduce people's reliance on them.

Meta is currently developing three distinct smart glasses products. The first, already available as Ray-Ban Meta, is a model with voice artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities but without a display. The second includes a limited heads-up display, and the third is a premium version with a complete FOV holographic display.

Zuckerberg's excitement about these glasses lies in their ability to enhance real-time communication and provide instant informational overlays. He stressed that smart glasses would keep people more engaged with their surroundings compared to smartphones, which often disrupt presence and focus.

Zuckerberg shared that Meta is nearing the point where they can demonstrate the prototype version of the full holographic glasses. He remarked:

We're focused on building the full consumer version of it rather than selling the prototype, but we're going to start demonstrating the prototype to people, and that's wild. Every person I've shown it to so far—their reaction, it's giddy.

One of the most promising features of these smart glasses is their potential integration with neural interfaces. Unlike invasive options like Elon Musk's NeuralinkMeta is working on a non-invasive neural wristband. This device will interpret neural signals from the wrist and translate them into device commands.

In essence, Meta's development of smart glasses with full holographic displays marks a step towards a new era of technology, potentially redefining our engagement with the digital world.
