Wikimedia Foundation Criticized over Cryptocurrency Donations

The non-profit organization that funds the works of Wikipedia faced backlash from the community due to its acceptance of cryptocurrencies.

The outrage against the Wikimedia Foundation began after concerns for the environment due to cryptocurrencies. While Wiki is not directly involved in the digital asset industry, it has been taking crypto as donations for the development of the website.

However, that was not taken lightly by the community. A subpage on Wikimedia was posted by Wikipedia editor GorillaWarfare (Molly White). She wrote about the dangers of cryptocurrencies in terms of the environment, and that the Wikimedia Foundation should stop accepting any donations in the form of digital assets.

She issued a 3-piece proposal for Wikimedia: to stop endorsing cryptocurrencies via donations because they are "extremely risky investments", don't align with Wikimedia Foundation's commitment to environmental sustainability, and risk damaging the platform's reputation.

The proposal came with a voting poll that lets Wikimedia contributors support or oppose the post by GorillaWarfare.

With the majority of users in favor of the proposal, most of them pointing out the sustainability of cryptocurrencies, the opposing side argued that digital assets are less damaging, or at least on par with physical currency in terms of the environment.

The end result of the poll was said not to be determined by the amount of "yeses or noes", but on the basis of the arguments proposed by users.

Just a few days ago, the Mozilla Foundation received criticism from the community and even the co-founder of Mozilla Jamie Zawinski himself, because the open-source website started taking donations in cryptocurrencies.
