In response, Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson took action by setting up the People's Fund of Maui, a direct financial assistance program aimed at those impacted by the wildfires.
According to the announcement, crypto donations aim to expand the reach of the People's Fund of Maui, aiming to financially support residents affected by the disaster.
In a tweet shared on August 31st, Dwayne Johnson confirmed that every adult residing in the affected zones of Lahaina and Kula will be eligible to receive a monthly pay of $1,200. On the other hand, the A-list celebrity is urging people to donate, claiming that 100% of the proceeds will go to the wildfire victims.
The relief fund accepts a wide range of fiat currencies along with cryptocurrency options such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and Dogecoin (DOGE).
When talking about the reasoning behind offering direct financial aid to the survivors, Oprah Winfrey elaborated:
People being able to have their own agency, being able to make decisions for themselves — about what they need and what their family needs — that is our goal.
Simultaneously, other organizations have stepped up their efforts to provide assistance. Among them, All Hands and Hearts has been actively collecting both cryptocurrency and fiat donations to help residents recover from the disaster.
Olga Ruggiero, chief of organizational integration and events at All Hands and Hearts, remarked:
Cryptocurrency donations, like any other type, are helping to provide essential support after the devastating wildfires. The crypto industry continues to band together with communities around the world in need.
The People's Fund of Maui's acceptance of cryptocurrency donations, facilitated by celebrities Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson, not only broadens the scope of potential contributors but also signifies the increasing role of digital assets in charitable causes.
