KuCoin Reveals that User Linked to Alleged Memecoin Scams is Its Customer

KuCoin refuses to take action against malicious actor until it receives official notice from law enforcement.

KuCoin, a Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange established in 2017, admits that one of its users is behind the address allegedly linked to countless memecoin scams.

The revelation came after a Twitter user on April 26th highlighted a wallet address that had launched between two to five memecoins daily for a span of two years.

Another individual chimed in, suggesting that these wallet addresses were under KuCoin's control. Since then, Etherscan, a blockchain explorer, has flagged the address as a fake phishing wallet.

On April 26th, blockchain investigator ZachXBT discovered a wallet address that allegedly launched 114 memecoin scams during 45 days.

In an official statement, KuCoin verified that the wallet address in question does belong to one of its users. However, the crypto exchange's CEO Johnny Lyu explained that the company refuses to freeze the account until it receives an official notice from relevant authorities. Lyu further elaborated:

When the reporting party has provided relevant legal documents, procedures, or reporting records, we will assist and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to take temporary risk control measures in accordance with complaints and reports, user agreements, and Seychelles laws.

Moreover, KuCoin encouraged community members to report any suspicious activities to the police and submit relevant materials to its team. Lyu reassured that the crypto exchange is more than willing to cooperate once the necessary documents are provided.

KuCoin has recently faced other challenges as well. On April 24th, the platform's official Twitter account was hacked, resulting in a fake activity post that led some followers to lose their assets. Upon discovering the breach, KuCoin collaborated with Twitter to regain control of the account and pledged to compensate the affected victims.

While KuCoin acknowledges a user's alleged involvement in memecoin scams, they will not take action until they haven't received an official notice from law enforcement agencies.
