The countdown can be found by anyone using a Google search. The countdown will appear after the user searches “the Ethereum Merge” or “the Merge.” The countdown box contains the time left until the highly anticipated Merge. The estimated time is determined by current difficulty, hashrate, and merge difficulty.
Moreover, the countdown timer contains two bears running toward each other. It is considered that the bears will get closer to each other every time the time left until the Merge decreases. During the Merge, these bears will create a panda, the de facto mascot of the Ethereum Merge.
It is worth noting that the first stage of Ethereum Merge, called Bellatrix, has already launched on September 6th. The second stage of the Merge, Paris, will be triggered when Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD) reaches 58,750,000,000,000,000,000,000. It is considered to occur between September 10th and 20th.
In its Twitter thread, Padilla emphasizes that the estimated date is precise, stating:
The underlying data is getting pulled directly from the blockchain via some of the nodes we run.
Padilla highlighted that the initiative to create a countdown to commemorate Ethereum’s change to Proof-of-Stake came up for Google employees. The latter wanted to introduce “some cool easter egg” for this occasion.
