Blockchain Privacy Advocates Call on Incoming Congress to Defend Privacy Rights

Fight for the Future, the digital advocacy group, published an open letter urging incoming US lawmakers to defend privacy for the sake of freedom and democracy.

According to the primary source, this call is made to highlight the importance of protecting the privacy of everyday people in ensuring safety, self-determination, freedom of the press, and other rights that compose the core of democracy.

The letter points out that technology and software tools that protect user privacy are just as important as laws and regulations. These tools, the letter explains, can help users protect against discrimination, intimidation, and abuse from authoritarian regimes. In the letter, it is suggested that lawmakers support tools such as Signal, Firefox, Tor and Filecoin.

Following that, many of said privacy-protecting tools are built in the United States, the letter states. However, software developers who reside in the country encounter challenges. This has been expressed in the letter:

“Increasingly, the incredible creative power of US software developers is being chilled by clumsy, misguided legislative and regulatory actions.”

The letter is encouraging lawmakers to take a stand for a pro-privacy future and to support the right to privacy and the right to code.

This open call advises authorities to take concrete action to ensure both constitutional and human rights are protected online and offline setting. This includes identifying and correcting power imbalances and promoting privacy-protecting capabilities like end-to-end encryption technology.

At the time of the writing, the letter has been signed by 36 parties. Among these, there are blockchain industry leaders such as DeFi Education Fund, Ledger, Protocol Labs and Proton. The letter can be signed on the official webpage of Fight for the Future.
